Dymo Office Mate II Label Maker

Based on years of occasional use of one of these devices, my advice is to buy something else.

How it works: The tool uses rolls of blank Dymo label stock, 3/8" or 1/2" wide, by embossing your selected letters, numbers, or characters onto the tape, one at a time. Chose the character, then compress the main handle to "raise" the character (i.e., emboss). The embossed characters appear white, while the tape remains its original color. For each space desired, advance the tape by pulling the main handle in part way and letting go. When done, advance the tape a short distance, then press the lower bar to cut the tape and score the material to facilitate removing the backing. Stick on the label.

Pros:

- Some labels turn out fine.

Cons:

- This technology, if you can call it that, looks like it's from the 1940's.

- The method of producing a blank space between words (a half-pull of main handle) doesn't always work. Pull too far and a partial character is embossed, ruining the label. Don't pull far enough and the tape doesn't move.

- Tool fails to consistently advance the tape the correct distance, resulting in some labels having uneven spacing between characters, ruining the label.

- Limited choice of characters. Capitol letters, 0-9, a period and a slash. That's it.

- Slow. You have to turn the dial to letter/number to be embossed, stop completely, then compress the handle. Compress the handle before you've completely stopped spinning the dial, and the label is ruined.

- There's a gap between the rear of the main handle and frame that pinches my fingers if not careful.

- When peeling the backing off a label, if you bend the material at all, the bent portion will turn whitish, ruining the label.

Summary:

Dymo should redesign this device so it actually works well, or discontinue it.

This is one of those quirky, highly quotable films that even if it's not great cinema, it holds up to repeated viewings much better than most. In other words, a cult classic. If you've ever been bored out of your mind at work, annoyed by chirpy co-workers, patronized by an idiotic boss, frustrated by office machinery or just plain not interested in going to work, you're eligible for membership in the cult. Yes, there are some flaws. The plot is inconsistent and the ending is too predictable. But these are minor quibbles. There are so many scenes that are perfect jewels of comedy that you can forgive this film any little lapses. The acting is uniformly great, and I think we can all agree that we need to see a lot more of Ron Livingston. My personal favorite scene is his meeting with the consultants, but there are so many to chose from that it's really not fair to select just one. Buy the DVD because you're going to be watching this movie again and again.

I found that the adapter works ok with the Patriot Box Office. I bought it to give the Patriot unit some network functionality. The price is reasonable. It has a Realtek chipset which works with the Patriot. Do some research, there are others that perform better, including wireless-n (has to have the chipset). Don't expect lots of throughput, and it's range is really limited to twenty-five feet (it is wireless-G). It does allow the unit to wirelessly stream media, on a limited basis, depends on file bitrate. There is a problem with the adapter after a while it will "fall partly out" of the patriot box, since it cannot fully seat into the unit (using the rear input--you have to use the rear to make it work). It will sag and I've eventually put a small piece of foam--or a book--under the adapter to support it. 4 for function, 3 for fit.

After 3 months of use, I am still very pleased with this Panasonic phone. The sound quality on the speaker phone and handset is good/normal, but I am also pleased with the great sound quality when using a head set (which was my primary purpose). I used an older "no name" mono-ear telephony headset I had lying around and it works fine.

It is important to note that this phone uses batteries to power the speakerphone and headset volume, and not AC from a wall socket. Consequently, if you do not install the batteries, you will get poor/nil speakerphone and headset performance. Nearly all of the few lower rated reviews appear to be caused by either not reading the instructions fully or improper use.

I have had great performance since day one and expect my battery life to be equally good. (personally I use rechargeable batteries in all my products anyway, so this is not a concern). After only 90 days use, I am still on the original set of batteries. Heavy speakerphone use would probably drain the batteries faster, but that is expected. Incidentally, I like knowing that my phone is not dependent on the power grid and will work even when the power goes out. This phone will do that, even without batteries (but not via speakerphone).

The number memory function works well, with room for 24 saved numbers and the mute button and volume controls are very useful and work as designed. I also enjoy the large size of the number buttons/lettering. I have recently moved it from my desk top to a wall mount and am even more pleased with the phone (wall mount adapter is included).

Overall great product that I would buy again and highly recommend to anyone - especially if they are looking for a headset phone.
